One of the most common parenting mistakes I see as a family sociologist and parenting communication coach is talking to our kids as if they are NOT our equals!
For example, would you ever threaten to take away your husband’s car if he wasn’t listening to you? Or tell him if he didn’t do better at work, he wouldn’t be able to see his friends?
Doubtful!
How we listen to kids demonstrates that they matter. It’s the foundation of interaction, from a baby crying to a teen complaining about a rule.
We are made into people by our interactions.
Communication is so vital because it is the one thing we can control in facilitating generational change of behavior patterns.
I believe listening to and affirming the truth teens are trying to impart can change the trajectory of their lives!
If you’re worried about the track your teen seems to be headed down, then getting them back means learning new Conscious Communication Skills.
It is my honor to guide parents through a step by step, research-based, proprietary family communication program Back on Track to communicate intentionally and purposefully, as if they are talking to their teen’s best self.
Guess what? Teens step up to engage on that level too!
