The usual counsel for parents of teens, especially those with neurodiversity is to motivate them with consequences and behavior modification.
It’s perfectly understandable that you haven’t had the connection and results you want with your teen because neurodiverse teens aren’t motivated by consequences. They are motivated by their passions, and they are intensively protective of their autonomy.
I wish I knew earlier in my daughters’ lives that the way I communicated with them, particularly since they were neurodiverse, could make THE difference in their successful navigation into young adulthood.
I hadn’t realized that pushing them was heard as criticism by them.
I grew up under authoritarian parenting and unconsciously repeated it not knowing that it worked against exactly what my girls needed. The good news is, it wasn’t too late to enjoy the closeness our hearts needed, and it wasn’t too late to hold the boundaries that would serve as guideposts for them either.
Yes, it is possible to cultivate lifelong loving connections and still hold boundaries!
Communicating more consciously was the key.
I no longer had to fear that they would enter young adulthood unprepared. Neither did I have to fear that they would shut me out when they left home. In fact, it was the opposite, the trust we grew with conscious communication, made them seek my guidance.
Your neurodiverse teen does not need perfect parents. They need conscious parents willing to do the work to heal and grow. We recovered from family alcoholism and divorce to deeply connect and solve problems together.
It would be my honor to show you how conscious communication works to help your neurodiverse preteens and teens meet their goals while nourishing the deep connection your hearts need, one of my Back on Track Family Communication Coaching Programs may be for you.
